EP: Marky – Journey to Markyland, USA: Rest Stop 2 | @Markyland

Trilogies are not always ideal. Just think of the way Spiderman ended, with a hapless Spidey whose infatuation with love and quick-to-the-streets dancing destroyed our views of the superhero we had come to love in the first film. (Seriously, when you saw his choreography scene, you can’t tell me you still were rooting for the guy.) Then, there’s the recent Transformers II, with its lackluster plot overshadowing the action scenes that finally came to be in the latter parts of the film. We can hope only that the final sequel will induce a hypnotic trance that we forget this speed bump – my guess is probably not.

In comes SRC/Universal Music artist Marky, who is all too familiar with the trilogy curse and even more so the sophomore jinx, yet he’s unwilling to fall into the traps that dilute the impact that trilogies may bring. We tend to think that more is better, but more for Marky is the quality in his music. The Journey to Markyland, USA trilogy (this time backed by DJ Booth and Kevin Nottingham) is unlike anything else, with versatility and peerless artistry at its core – the very qualities that encourage us to keep begging for more music that will lay out the path to Markyland.

What other hip hop artist has sampled Johnny Cash? None, by my count and research. Add to the production repertoire the European smash “I’ll Get You” by American DJs Classixx, The Fantastic Four (the ’60s & ’70s Motown group that brought us “Mixed Up Moods & Attitudes”, a song sampled by Nas in “Take It In Blood”), DJ Premier, Danja and Timbaland, Thelonious Martin, and Dr. Dre – in other words, we get a 7-track sequel that inevitably takes us on a time-traveling journey through the ’60s and beyond, giving us a picture of music’s timeliness throughout the years. And this is merely the sound of the project.

Spidey’s failed attempt to woo us:

Not one to let the sound overshadow him, Marky perfectly selects what sound complements the substance of his powerful music, equipped with the fortitude to say what most won’t, to bring to us a cerebral feel that touches on a myriad of topics, from the quick-to-bring-you-down adversity that unfortunately trips most (“Run On”) to love’s overbearing cloak that we are unable to take off (“Last Time”). Let’s not forget the materialism that corrupts most, a sentiment that invariably dilutes the motivation of many and tends to reduce the quality of music – the subject of “Louis Squares”.

All in all, Rest Stop 2‘s intent to pave the way to Markyland, USA does just that and more. Prominent in this EP is the hunger and drive that this DMVer expresses, but more importantly Marky architects the gateway for you – the true fans of music – to get to know him. It’s as simple as that. With this simple goal in mind, Marky inexorably gets us to ask for me, for more of the heavy content, for more of his incomparable delivery and sound, for more purism. In a way, Marky’s motivation to introduce himself allows the the fans to introduce themselves to him, thereby creating an organic collective that will always keep Marky on his heels and onto a path of composing excellent music. This is Markyland, USA. Welcome to your new home.

As of now, my life is hectic, but in a good way, and an even better way for me to establish and re-insert what little sanity is left in this world is to spread the word on what I find most interesting in this world. Usually, this entails music, but I dabble in a bit of politics, humor, philosophy, the law, whatever stands out to me at any given point. What once was a hobby has become a source of entertainment and happiness; yet, it's all one and the same - wouldn't you think?
